MMR

Measles, mumps and rubella are viral infections spread by coughs and sneezes. Measles in particular is among the most contagious diseases there is, and it is dangerous: pneumonia, encephalitis and, rarely, death. Outbreaks are common across Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, and increasingly in Western Europe and the UK as vaccination rates have slipped. Two doses of MMR protect for life.

Who should have it

Anyone who has not had two doses. Many adults born in the 1970s and 1980s had only one, or none; some had the single measles vaccine and nothing for mumps or rubella. If you do not know, it is safe to have the course again. Rubella protection matters especially for women who may become pregnant, as the infection in early pregnancy harms the baby.

The vaccine

Two injections one month apart, suitable from one year of age (from six months for babies travelling to an outbreak, with the routine doses still given later). MMR is a live vaccine, so it is not given in pregnancy or to people with a seriously weakened immune system.

Free on the NHS?

MMR is free on the NHS at any age from your GP surgery. Ask them first. We offer it privately for anyone who cannot get an appointment in time, or who would rather have it done alongside their travel vaccines — it is booked through the travel consultation.
