Meningitis B

Meningococcal group B is the strain behind most cases of bacterial meningitis in the UK, and the ACWY vaccine does not cover it. Babies born since 2015 have it on the NHS schedule; older children, teenagers and adults do not, and they are the next most affected group. It is not a travel vaccine in the usual sense — the risk is as much at home as abroad — but people often ask for it alongside their travel jabs, particularly before university, and we offer it here.

Who should consider it

• Teenagers and young adults, especially before starting university or moving into shared accommodation.
• Anyone who missed the infant programme and wants protection.
• People with certain medical conditions that raise the risk of meningococcal disease — the pharmacist will advise.

The vaccine

Trumenba is given as two injections at least six months apart, and is suitable from ten years of age. Younger children can have Bexsero instead — ask when you book. A sore arm and a mild temperature for a day or two are common; paracetamol helps.
