Emergency contraception is most effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, and can be taken up to five days afterwards depending on the type. If you need it, do not wait to see whether it will be all right — the earlier the better.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 16 and over can buy emergency contraception from us. The pharmacist will ask a few questions in confidence to make sure it is suitable and to advise on which type is right for you.
Emergency contraception is also available free on the NHS through sexual health clinics and many GP surgeries, and to younger people through local NHS schemes. If cost is a concern, ask us and we will point you to a free route.
How it works
Because time matters, this is one to do in person: come to the pharmacy in Harrow and ask to speak to the pharmacist. The conversation is private and confidential — you do not have to explain yourself to anyone at the counter.
Good to know
- It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- If you are sick within a few hours of taking it, you may need another dose — contact us.
- Your next period may be earlier or later than usual. If it is more than a week late, take a pregnancy test.
- If you are having to use emergency contraception regularly, our NHS contraception service can supply the pill free, by phone, without a GP appointment.
