Why Do I Need a PCR Test for Travel?

What is PCR testing?

PCR testing is the most accurate way to identify an active Covid infection. PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction; the test involves taking a swab of the inside of your nose, as well as your tonsils (or the area where your tonsils would normally be).

Red list

You should not travel to the countries and territories on this list. In the event that you are returning from a red list country, you are required to take a Covid test. You should also book your quarantine hotel package prior to travel. You also need to book two Covid tests, to be taken on day 2 and day 8 of your isolation, as well as making sure to fill out your passenger locator form.

Amber list

You are required to take a Covid test before your return from one of these countries. You should also book your day 2 and 8 travel tests for when you return; you are also required to complete a passenger locator form.

If you are fully vaccinated, you are only required to take a day 2 test and you are not required to isolate. If, however, you are not fully vaccinated, once you arrive you need to isolate at home or within a fixed location for 10 days, as well as taking your day 2 and 8 tests.

Green list

If you are looking to jet off, travel to countries on this list is permitted. However, you are also required to take a Covid test before your return to the UK, as well as booking a day 2 test and filling out your passenger locator form. You are not required to isolate on your return.

Regulations within your destination country

Different countries and territories have their own regulations regarding travel. That is why we advise that you stay updated with Foreign Office guidance before you travel. You should view preparing for Covid restrictions in 2021 with the same necessity as remembering your passport and boarding pass. This is also true as a multitude of popular holiday destinations and airlines need proof of a negative Covid test result 72 hours before you travel from the UK as well.
