The whole world has been paralysed by the spread of Covid-19 over the last couple of years, with 6.5 million people having died as a result of the lethal virus. However, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief, as the end of the pandemic is finally in sight, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In England, the number of people infected with Covid-19 in the last seven days was 24,880. However, covid-related deaths within 28 days of testing positive in England has fallen by 24.9 per cent over the past week, while the number of patients admitted to hospital with the virus has declined by 12 per cent.
This is likely to be the result of 93.5 per cent of the public having had their first dose of the vaccination, while more than two-thirds have had a booster.
WHO’s director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told Sky News: “We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic – we are not there yet, but the end is in sight.”
However, he noted the importance of continuing efforts to control the spread and protect the public. Using the analogy of a marathon, Dr Ghebreyesus said a runner does not stop when they see the finish line.
“We’re in a winning position. But now is the worst time to stop running,” it was added.
Otherwise, he noted the possibility of more deaths, further variant mutations, and greater disruption to society.
Consequently, the WHO issued guidance to governments on vaccinations, testing, disease management, infection control and community engagement.
Indeed, Covid-19 is still a significant threat to society, and more than a million have died from the virus already this year.
